Thousands packed the Greater Grace Temple Friday morning to remember Fettig and Bowens, who were gunned down during a traffic stop this week.

The service began with tearful words from the officer’s families.

Fettig’s mother, Kathy, had a message for the person responsible for her daughter’s death.

“To the killer, I would like to say: You picked the wrong two kids that night. When you killed my baby, you sparked a firestorm of outrage against senseless violence,” she said, prompting a standing ovation from the thousands in attendance at the downtown church.

Those in attendance included Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and thousands of fellow officers from across Michigan, neighboring states and Canada, which sent members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

“How many of us can pick the way we die? Those two did. I’ve been assured by the governor, by the mayor they’re going to help,” said Bowens’ father, James. “I don’t take words lightly. If you’re telling me you’re going to help, you better help. Priority four-five officer down. Don’t forget those words. That’s my son’s last words of life.
